7 Wedding Consultant (Planner, Coordinator) Myths Exposed

There are several myths in wedding world that can deter brides from hiring wedding consultants. Below you will see a handful of the myths exposed…

Myth: I can’t afford a wedding consultant

A wedding consultant is a part of your budget not an extra expense. Hiring a professional wedding consultant can save you time and money, as well as help you avoid costly pitfalls in your wedding planning. You can’t afford not to hire one. A good wedding consultant is worth their weight in gold.

Myth: Wedding consultants are bossy and take over the show

A wedding consultant works with the bride to assure that her wedding day meets her desires. A professional wedding consultant does not impose their will; instead are there to provide expertise and guidance in making the wedding a success. After all it is your wedding and your consultant wants to make it the best day possible.

Myth: Wedding consultants only recommend vendors that they receive kick backs from

Your wedding consultant has your best interest at hand, and will only suggest quality vendors that meet your style as well as budget. Making recommendations based on kick backs is unethical, and a professional would want to operate a respectable business.

Myth: I am paying this wedding consultant; therefore she should do anything I tell her to do

A wedding consultant is very helpful and in most cases a life saver in your wedding planning; however let’s not mistake him/her as your indentured servant. Your wedding consultant is more than happy to assist, but please treat them with respect.

Myth: My wedding consultant is not running around looking busy, he/she is not doing a good job

The essence of being a good wedding consultant is planning in advance. An experienced wedding consultant can foresee pitfalls and recommends the best team of vendors to avoid unnecessary mistakes. Running around frantically putting out fires shows lack of experience and ability to successfully manage the event. Although no wedding is perfect an experienced professional can make it appear like near perfection.

Myth: Wedding consultants will answer all my questions over the phone or during my initial consultation to help me plan my wedding prior to being hired.

Your wedding consultant has spent many years gaining their knowledge of the industry and building relationships with vendors. In most cases the consultant has spent several thousand dollars on continuing education and maintaining their business. Although they love what they do, this is a business and you should respect their expertise and compensate them accordingly.

Myth: You don't need a wedding consultant your venue has onsite coordinating:

A wedding consultant is your personal representative looking out for your best interest, not the interest of the venue. I have yet to see a venue consultant accompany a bride to the gown shop or help with invitations. A wedding consultant can offer A to Z assistance in planning and coordinating your event. Having your own personal consultant allows the onsite consultant to focus on the venue specific duties that make your wedding flow. Even if you hire the best vendors in town you still need someone to pull it all together. The best team needs a coach.

I can’t stress more the importance of doing your research and hiring a professional wedding consultant. And as with all things in life, you get what you pay for.
